The mountainous glaciers north of the Icetrout Lake are the source of the lake’s fame, resources, and treacherous conditions all at once. Every spring, the lake floods as glaciers melt into it. Great chunks of falling ice make the Northernmost rim completely unavailable, and the rest of the lake becomes impossible to navigate without specially designed ships. The villages of the lake must float on the surface to avoid drowning during the potential mile-long expansion of the lake during the “warm” season, and rely on Vaskalt to carry out their land and Jormungar River based trade.
The constant near-freezing cold of the lake makes it the unique home of the namesake Icetrout fish. These monsters are 60 feet long full grown, with a ravenous appetite. Furthermore, these terrible foes have discovered that breaking a surface ship apart yields a tasty rain of snacks. The Leonarians who ply the Icetrout trade successfully become very rich, however, as every last bit of the fish yields expensive goods sought after throughout Leonara and abroad. The meat is a delicacy of the highest order. The eyes are a treasured magical component. The bones, though, are the true reason for the hunt. They are so lightweight that they are buoyant, yet stronger than stone. Their use in armored ship construction is a requirement for survival in the lake itself, but it is the a rare and vital military asset elsewhere. The smooth Ivory texture and exotic nature of the bones also makes them a luxury item for the wealthy, and Leonarian sculptors dream of an “Ice Bone” masterpiece.
The fishermen of the lake provide for themselves and their families, but it is also understood they will all contribute a large portion of their shares to their entire village. There are many widows and orphans in this unforgiving environment, and every man in a hunting boat wants to know that should an Icetrout capsize his vessel, the other boats of the village will look after his family.
